That academic year 49/50

It is the Academic Year 1949-50 (more precisely February 1950), Faculty of Engineering, naval branch. During a drill-lesson in the Drawing Hall, a "freshman", called Armando Corso, starts whistling a mountain song; immediately the student next to him, Gianni Pippo, does the same; the two young men are glad of knowing such an unusual musical genre. In short they make friends and realize they had a common source: the famous "Canzoniere" of SAT Chorus. Soon after two more young men, Gianni's friends, join them: they are Luigi Ferrera and Piero Caselli, and they too are fond of mountain songs. The little group decides to start singing together. Not to give trouble to anybody in the University Halls, they meet near a bench in the park of "Villa Cambiaso", the seat of the Faculty of Engineering; that bench, that is still there, will be the first seat of the Chorus. Few weeks later the bench is already too small; so the friends decide to meet in the evening at a dairy in via Montallegro, still in Albaro, where they start rehearsing. That shop does not exist any more; Gianni Capodivacca describes it like that: "It was a peculiar dairy, on the tables you could see only wine; I have never seen milk!" They collect money to buy a couple of white wine flasks and start singing. When they stop rehearsing - generally when the wine is all over - they cheerfully accompany one another home. But it is not always like that.... Where sometimes those young men decide to meet? In which.... unusual places they keep sometimes their rehearsing?
