Mount Cauriol

Hikers often happen to meet with rubbish left around, and they are deeply annoyed as nobody felt bound to hide the traces of their passing. Sometimes we find troublesome things; we do not avoid them, but we are deeply inquisitive while looking for them: barded wire, helmets, rusty splinters, cartridge cases. On Mount Cauriol there are still a lot of those remains, which remind us of ancient and forgotten stories. The tiring climbing and the inclement day help to understand the unknown heroism of those who had to live and fight here for long months in 1916, among dirt and lice, hunger and thirst, ice and mud, fear and homesickness.

On august the 24th, 1916, there started the italian military operations against Mount Cauriol, that, thanks to its strategic position, was an extremely important bulwark in the austrian front. The "Alpini" of Feltre and Val Brenta battalions were employed against the Cauriol emplacements. The assault, almost always unprotected, lasted till the 27th. Three times the "Alpini" found themselves very close to the austrian trenchs, and three times they were compelled to withdraw. At the fourth assault the "Alpini", helped by the 5th mountain battery, were able to carry out their task and occupied the Cauriol top emplacements. As the uproar of the battle was calmed don, among the slopes was heard a song: it was Monte Cauriol, which Alpini composed in memory of their companions who gave their life on this mountain.
